Blog #1 PLN&Public Communications & Digital Identity.
Instagram is the social media platform I use most often, mainly to stay connected with friends and keep up with content that interests me. In this post, I reflect on how using social media has shaped my Personal Learning Network (PLN) and my digital identity, as well as the benefits and challenges of communicating in public online spaces.
Networking Using Social Media
Networking through social media means connecting with others online to share ideas, interests, and information. It is not only about staying in touch with friends, but also about engaging with people who have similar interests. Through platforms like Instagram, interactions such as liking, commenting, and sharing content help create connections and support learning.
Motivation to Participate in Networked Publics
People participate in networked publics for many reasons, including learning, connection, and personal interest. Social media makes it easy to engage with content that feels relatable or inspiring. For me, I am most motivated to participate when I see posts that match my interests or experiences, which encourages interaction and engagement.
Risks and Rewards of Public Communication
Public communication allows people to share ideas, express themselves, and connect with a wider audience. It can help build confidence and create learning opportunities. However, there are also risks, such as privacy concerns and losing control over how content is shared or interpreted. Being aware of these risks encourages more responsible social media use.
Digital Identity
A digital identity is the way a person represents themselves online through posts, interactions, and shared content. Personal and professional approaches to digital identity can affect how social media is used, as personal accounts often include more casual or playful content while professional accounts are more polished and goal-focused. In networked publics, these identities often overlap, especially when the same platform is used for multiple purposes. This convergence can be beneficial by allowing people to build broader connections and present an authentic version of themselves, but it also requires being mindful of what is shared since different audiences may view the same content.
